Maura Stephens is an independent journalist, educator, author, theatre artist, and lifelong human rights activist. As a Founding Board Member of the Dehkhoda Educational Foundation, Ms. Stephens contributes decades of experience in media, education, and social justice advocacy to further the Foundation’s mission of promoting peace, progress, and prosperity through civic engagement and education.
Throughout her multifaceted career, Ms. Stephens has used storytelling—on the page, on stage, and in the classroom—as a tool for empowerment and change. Her journalism has focused on underreported stories and marginalized communities, with a strong commitment to ethical reporting and media literacy. As an educator, she has taught writing, media ethics, and social justice at institutions including Ithaca College, where she co-founded the Park Center for Independent Media.
A passionate believer in the power of the arts to create dialogue and healing, Ms. Stephens has also worked extensively in theatre as a writer, actor, and director. Her performances often center on themes of resistance, solidarity, and liberation. Whether marching in protest or mentoring students, her activism is rooted in a fierce compassion and global vision.
Ms. Stephens’ values closely mirror those of Ali Akbar Dehkhoda, whose courage as a truth-teller and reformer continues to inspire advocates of justice worldwide. Through her work with the Dehkhoda Educational Foundation, she helps amplify voices of conscience and creativity while advancing the cause of education as a human right.
